SESSION CLIP: Committee Appointments Set

Me & My OBGFebruary 6, 2015Articles

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Straus have announced committees and chairs for the 2015 Legislature. In the Texas Senate, five committees are of particular interest to the Me & My OBG Campaign given their impact Texas women’s health:
hearing room

  • SENATE COMMITTEE ON FINANCE
Where state budget decisions are made.
Article II in the proposed budget will set forth spending on healthcare. Sen. Jane Nelson (R-Flower Mound) was reappointed as chair of this powerful committee, after being named chair this interim. She is the first woman to hold the post. Before becoming chair of Finance, Senator Nelson was the longest-serving chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.
  • SENATE COMMITTEE ON HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES
Where the majority of healthcare issues are discussed.
Sen. Charles Schwertner (R-Georgetown), an orthopedic surgeon, is chair. No stranger to this committee and its work, Dr. Schwertner was appointed its interim chair this summer.
  • SENATE COMMITTEE ON STATE AFFAIRS
In many ways a ‘catch-all’ committee, reproductive health legislation is sometimes referred here.
Sen. Joan Huffman (R-Houston) will serve as chair. Me & My OBG worked with Chair Huffman last session to pass legislation relating to the creation of a task force to study maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity.
  • SENATE COMMITTEE BUSINESS & COMMERCE
Where, in addition to business initiatives, some health insurance issues are referred.
Sen. Kevin Eltife (R-Tyler) will preside as chair.

The committee’s new chair is Rep. Myra Crownover (R-Denton).
  • HOUSE COMMITTEE ON STATE AFFAIRS
As in the Senate, in many ways a ‘catch-all’ committee, reproductive health legislation is sometimes referred here.
